Are there designers working that are over 40? just wondering where older designers go after a certain age?
worked in many shops and the age seems to be around 20- 30ish.
I know that they usually go into art direction or more management roles, but are there any designers that like to just design and are happy with being a designer?

Yeah, last places I have been at designers seem to be between 20-30. ad/cd little bit older, but don't see too many past 40.

I don't think we have an Associate Creative Director under 30. I know that almost all the CDs are over 40. Most are in their early 50s.

Some guy told me the other day(for the 10th time) how he used to distort type with prisms on a photostat machine. I acted all naive and amazed as I usually do because anything else would be considered "negative" attitudinally.

actually most designers are way over 40, we just wear converse sneakers and plaid short sleeve shirts to look as much like a skateboarder as possible, and keep our hair short or cut it off and go bald to hide the grey, talk about snowboarding at the water cooler and bingo we turn 26 all over again. on the plus side, we can keep hitting up on all the young designer chicks for years. it's all true, old people are wiser.

I heard they put them all on ice floats, send them off and let them die piecefully and dignified in the middle of the arctic ocean...

There are a few choices for aging designers:
1.) Go into management and have your soul drained.
2.) Commit suicide.
3.) Teach.
4.) O.D. and then enter rehab at the studio's expense.
5.) Retire early (yea like thats gonna happen on our saleries)
6.) Move to a real small town where your outdated design skills still seem "Fresh"I should know, 16 days till I'm 40.
I think my boss is gonna take me out back and put bullet in my head. It's the only humane thing to do, really.

When i was your age, we didn't have design. Everything was jagged and horribly colored and would make your eyes bleed.

good to know there is a future for older designers. Seems like designers are starting out younger and younger.
