I had a general question about what the process is to produce shirts that have custom patterns such as follows:

are you talking about the allover print?
the garment is most likely cut & sew, meaning they make their own tees and have the panels printed before assembly.
that example you posted there with the anchors *could* also have been pulled-off as oversized screenprints if the prints don't wrap around the full sleeve, but i doubt because you can see its not exactly straight around teh bottom hem.
therefore; cut & sew.

yep, cut & sew. custom assembly. if I were to do that, I would get the graphic pattern printed on the fabric roll itself. there are printers who have big tubular screen printers that just roll on down the fabric, or you can get it done digitally for smaller runs with a textile inkjet printer. there are a bunch in NYC and LA. then cut the pieces out and sew! woo!

thank you for the answers guys .. so basically they print on the flat material then construct from there? .. do most of these companies hand sew their stuff or is there some shops that do this mass order for you

it depends on the fabrication. you can do your own development and have it done by a factory, but you better have big orders to cut. if you are doing it domestically you can do smaller quantities. you can also sew by yourself if you want/have the equipment(industrial sewing machines if you want it done right).
i also forgot one alternative: acid sublimation printing, which can go all over if you get a good printer that knows what he/she is doing. you also can't do it on 100% cotton material, it has to be 50/50 or all synthetic.
apparel manufacturing is a tricky business and a long and windy road, not to mention extremely expensive. good luck!

they are actually quite different processess, using different inks and exposure methods.

oh good..
the "whoops" was because i just sent a bunch of 100% cotton for discharge :)
so is acid sublimation the same as what i would know as standard sublimation?

when i did apparel i just went out on the floor of the faactory and made my own shirt bodies, then gave it to the head guy and he had patterns made.
i have a lot of background experience with sewing 'n' shit though...

if not what is it?also, do you guys have a lead to any companies that will accomodate a small run so i can get a quote?

cut & sew basically just refers to any garments you make from pattern and have assembled, rather than printing stock tee's, hats or whatever.
advantages obviously you can select colors, allover print, screens falling under seams, etc etc.
but not something you want to get into without massive orders or shitloads of $$$. as previously said its kinda a huge gnarly jump into the world of garment manufacturing.

sublimation usually cooks the dye into the fabric.. still not sure what acid sublimation is, would like to know.
