Aight guys I'm thinking of finally moving out of the parentals but I seriously suck at budgeting! I was wondering how much you guys pay for rent and how much do you make?
Cause i'm not really sure what I can afford out there.
Thanks for the help!

If you get paid twice a month, your rent really shouldn't come close to one paycheck after taxes.
Keep in mind you're going to want other stuff like: Cable; Internet; Food; Gas; Random Expenditures.

thats a nice tip flav! NICE!

generally no more than 35% of monthly gross (pre tax) income if you like eating anything besides ramen.

I agree with flav and johndiggity. Don't fall for something flashy or hip if it doesn't fall into your price range. Start saving money to afford your own place in a couple of years and to keep out of debt.

If you need to open up a bunch of credit cards you're living beyond your means.

e pill gives me money whenever I need it

I'm good with the credit cards and right now the only debt I have is for my car and for school... I'm gonna look around this weekend and see the price range of the different areas.

(Jul 5 06, 10:13)The $ in front of $10000 does NOT count as a digit!
lol

e-pill don't you live in NYC?
How the hell did you find a nice place for $1200?
I have like 2 weeks to find a new place, and I can't find anything I like... that is in my "I want to have people over for BBQs, but not BBQ Ramen" means. :X
Cheers to procastination, heh.

Something you can do in the mean time is to start buying household necessities that you don't already have and/or are not getting handmedowns of (dishes, silverware, cleaning products, pots and pans, whatever). That stuff adds up. Sometimes, certain stores start selling "dorm packs" for college students who will be in dorms. You can get like a 100-piece kitchen set for $50. Not the greatest of quality, but usable for awhile.

Yea geez, I forgot about starting a new too boot.
Furniture is ridiculous if you like nicer stuff (Ikea is dope for anyone's first apartment despite the cliche - they do have good, cheap, nice looking things furniture and household related).
And don't get a roommate even if he is your friend because they'll end up ruining everything (unless you know they aren't a slob, haha).
I have to get all new furniture now and am giving my old stuff to my one buddy's brother who is in college, heh.

Ya that is what kind of freaks me out... I think I can cover a 1200 rent but then I also want dsl, cable, then i gotta pay for utilities (unless i find one that includes it), don't I have to pay for a phone line too? AHHHHHHH haha i think i would get overwhelmed!
- Momentum20
oh forgot the furniture too!!

Utilities aren't terrible, might be an extra 100 or so a month.

Good place to start on places.

Look for apts that cover your utilities. The fewer bills you have to worry about your first time out, the better you can keep track of them. Also, have a bit of a slush fund set aside for emergencies and add to it each month. Totally separate from your savings account (if you have one). That way you know when you can afford a better tv/microwave/whatever. Or at least make sure you have a savings account that you add to, That way, if your car needs repair or a woolly mammoth tramples through your living room and smashes your couch, you have something to help with the expense.

Starting off you're not going to need everything at once.
Try to save up a little bit here and there and get stuff in pieces.
Get a bed, do not necessarily need a stand or whatever it's called rite away.
Paper plates, paper cups, plastic-ware works well (what my Mom always "summer rules") until you find a set you like and can afford.
Big cardboard boxes can double as stands - you can draw on them or put a sheet over them to make them look like they aren't necessarily card board boxes as well.
