sony, panasonic and canon all have models a step down that are around 1500-2000. i think one of them has a hi-def one out.
my friend had a canon gl2 forever.

pana 100b of course is the thing to have for another hot minute, but the next big thing is HD on a mini dv, i've heard pretty good reviews on the Sony HDR-HC1 HDV it's running about 2k, pretty good low light in a tiny size. http://www.camcorderinfo.com/con…
the same friend has a Z1 but swears by this smaller one. another option is the pana DVC30 that has pretty cool night time capability, they call it a spy cam because of that.
hope that helps.

Dude- Dont stress about changing lenses. Everyone gets the canon thinking that they will always use that feature and no one ever does.
First you have to buy an adaptor and then you realise that because the CCD in the camera is 2/3 inch and your lenses are built for 35mm most of them wont work.
Get any 3ccd camera you can find, if you want to attach lenses, get and adaptor that will fit on most dv cameras, talked about here
