Why is it so unreliable sometimes?
In this case, I have a movie clip with type in it, as the mask layer. A simple gradient is being masked.
There are two text boxes on one layer in the mask (movie clip). Only one of the text boxes masks the gradient.

try using setMask(myMc);

A mask will not work with a dynamic text field I believe. I've learned this the hard way.

a mask will work with a dynamic text field as long as the textbox has embed all the typeface characters.
it will work also with non-embed textfield font as long as the mask is rectangular [the font may or may not be a flash system font ie. _serif, _sans]

It wasn't a dynamic text field. I did a workaround. Thanks for the tip about setMask. I always forget about that option.

dynamic text must be masked with setMask() for it to work correctly, if the font is not a system font then the font or all chars used need to be embedded
