i've been working in design for a couple of years now and i realise that i have a very limited knowledge of print processes and production techniques, binding methods etc....
can anyone recommend a good book on the subject.

(Jul 27 06, 01:52)print finishing is always different from supplier to supplier. It's always best to discuss your job with the production manager to get the best of the process and how well they can do the finishing.

but i'm not even aware of all the possible finishes. that's what i'm looking for. need a book dammit! with ectual examples would be amazing but maybe a stretch?
cheers.

all printshops have sample books from the paper companies, and give them away with a smile.

but that's usually just paper types isnt it?
i've got loads of paper samples...
i'm interested in the ink or process that goes on them too.thanks.

I have stacks of Munken books with print samples, also HOW magazine is a good place to look, tons of weird ads with odd paper and print

My grandpa used to take me along to loads of print fairs when I was a kid, it was cool. Companies would have whole machines on display and loads of dodgy posters to pick up. If you see a printing fair on anywhere it's good to go see how it's done.

Make a few appointments with print shops saying you want to check out their work. You should be able to score some samples, get an insight into their specific processes and what their techniques are. Ask questions and don't be afraid to come off being stupid. I learn something new everytime I go to the printers to pick up a job. Such as the guys that do the plate engraving for foil blocks have bottles of amyl nitrate (poppers) next to the acid tubs in case the electrodes are wired wrong producing noxious acid fumes. They use the Amyl to counteract the effects. But mostly you will learn by doing, fucking up and making mistakes.

this book is quite good for quick understandings, i have the set for reference and a nice little catch up read since uni. I have done a good solid amount of print recently after doing web for the past few years so it was good to catch up.
I got a sample pack from generation press which had a fair few examples in - though they charged a bomb! I used a holofoil diffuser on plyke for my cards in the end... look juicy!
