For the life of me I cannot find a decent site online about repainting a porch.
I know this isn't HGTV.com, but if anyone has any good tips or links on how to repaint a front porch I'd appreciate it!
Just want to know if I need to use a cleaner first, then sand, then prime, then paint...or what.
thanks!

we repainted my parent's decks last year. we power washed it with some stuff in the water to kill anything growing on or in it, then used a stain then thompsons water seal.
if you're painting it, i imagine there would be a high traffic paint or a sealer you'd need to get.

there has to be forums on hgtv or tlc which would know it.
yes you should power wash it. chip off old paint. use outdoor paint, and seal.

wood or concrete?
you should clean with tsp first sand and chip loose stuff off.
Is this for the new place or old?

(Jun 26 06, 10:50)"It's for the new place...the porch needs a new coat of paint and some general cleaning up in areas...and I'm wondering if we can stain the deck a darker color as teh previous tenants weren;t really that careful about spilling things on it...there are a few stains in places....

I'm in the middle of coating my porch, deck and the entire siding of my log house. It's a pain in the ass, but I have learned a ton about the process and the products.
1. Powerwash with a 20% solution of bleach (or use an eco freindly product like TimberWash http://www.millerbrospaint.com/o…
2. Let dry and check for any rot or loose wood. Repalce as needed.
3. Coat with a product such as Sikkens Rubol or Cetol (depending on whether you want opaque or transparent) http://www.nam.sikkens.com/produ…
4. The sit back for 7 years, pop a cold one and never think of it again.

btw, TSP=Tri Sodium Phosphate
I say use it only if the bleach or Timberwash doesn't work well. It can leave funky residue and kills plants it contacts.

yeah tsp is really for interior wall with grease, etc.
