so i just got canon SD600 to replace S50. and i am seeing a lot of noise on pics i've taken. is this what i should expect from an ultra compact cam? my s50 is 3-4yrs old 5meg pix camera and it takes much better pictures, especially at low light setting.
should i return sd600 and just keep my bulky s50?

naw... are you give it a chance to focus? Hold it half way down and let it focus. It will do like 3-4 quick chirps and on the LCD you should see green boxes showing the focus areas. For me, if I don't tell people to let it focus i get crap pics. If you just press it down it will fire. Gotta let it work.

hmmm, i did that. probably it has something to do with the sensor size.
joyride, what you have?

I've got a 2yr old cannon s500. Yours should be better. Mine takes really nice pics for point n shoot.
make sure it's on the highest settings otherwise it needs to downgrade for file size. I'm sure it's in the settings.

maybe check the review at http://www.dpreview.com
The reviews for each camera have a section on image quality and noise issues

yeah, i checked dpreview and all. canon sd600 is mentioned to create one of lowest noise in the category.
but i think the noise is noticable if i use anything above iso200. maybe i should turn on flash when i take photos of interior? i hate using flash.

one thing too, are you looking at the photos in PS? When I look at a full size image and zoom in, i'm surprised at the grain/noise. but when you print them out, they look perfect. So maybe head to the kodak machine and print 1 out for a test.

digital cams don't do that great in low light. But I think that shot looks ok. It's got some noise, but nothing crazy.

that shot is definitely low noise
no hot pixels or color shifts in the shadows. looks great for digital point and shoot in low light

its almost the 'black cat at night' test shot that one...

i like to test in the extreme condition.
