whats the question exactly?
the point is it doesnt really matter where you find something, what matters is who created it, and what the owner has said you can do with it (mixed in with various other laws n stuff), and then adjusted for 'fair use' including satire and reinterpretaion... (have I missed anything?)
if all else fails use common sense?

But isn't the rule something like if you're not using it for profit you can use anything (as long as you don't deface it)?
I guess my question is can I link an article or something found on another site? Could I link a story from ESPN.com and use the picture as well? Most blogs are links to other sites, so I'm guessing you can...

I dont think profit has much to do with it...its just about copyright laws. For example sites like jalopnik.com link to our stories on cardesignnews.com, using our photos, and we're not sure whether its a good thing (sending some traffic our way), or whether they are just stealing our content (should we charge them for our photography?)...sometimes it isnt easy to tell, depends how you do it, and whether the source likes the way you are doing it.... so many variables... thats why you have to use your own judgement...
