Man, I am so busy with freelance and my job. Time is the biggest problem, I should be working right now, but forget it. I just can't tonite. Not sure why I am posting this, but I need to bust loose. I have off of my 9-5 tomorrow to go to the Brewers game with my old school friends, so that is good, but it seems that every time I take off time to party and kick it, I feel guilty.

sorry to hear it, man.
i know what you're saying, too. my day job is a bit of a drag, so the evening/weekend design work is pretty enjoyable, but it does suck up the time.
hope you enjoy that game, and don't beat yourself up too much. those breaks really do increase productivity/quality.

enjoy what you love. job is a job, you can catch up when your mind is well rested and clear.

My dad talking:
If you get a head start on stuff tonight, you'll feel a lot better about going to the game tomorrow- even if it's just getting things organized.

these are all great points. thanks you are giving me a great bit of clarity about this whole thing. I bet this thread could be useful for others. We rarely talk about our workaholism.

i am working right now. but i think what's important is that learning to balance. i am not as workholic as i used to be.
i think i've gotten very good at managing my time. maybe it has something to do with my passion for design not as strong as the past.
i am working away and making money so i can buy my own place in 2yrs. and now, that's something to look forward to.

good luck tk.
I interviewed last week at a new place and that is also weighing on me. None of my friends in the city are in the same business as I am. So it is difficult to talk to any of them about this without them just saying "fuck it dude, get it done next week".
When your name is on contracts, that isnt an option, you know?
- tkmeister0
indeed.
we are in somewhat strange industry to many 9-5 job holders. they envy the idea of being able to freelance and make extra cash. but the reality is, we have to give up our free time to make that extra while others are enjoying drinks, dinner, etc.

I have to say it is great that my mom is working a decent job now and I dont have to foot the mortgage bill for her house every month. I think that contributed to turning me into this workmonster. I was on a constant hustle, trying to make every cent I could. I think it would help me to look past July 15th (deadlines).
I am definitely taking a month off of freelance then.

I hear ya ya'll... I've got to send my clients the contracts to get the downpayments. I'm already upsidedown on most of them more then I would like to be. But, shit i would rather do the work then write up the contract... necessary evil.

Der ... I work a "9 to 5".
Haha.
I think it's the same kind of outlook freelancers/"9 to 5ers" have towards each other a bit for the most part.
9to5ers think you are able to get up and leave whenever you want to do whatever you want as long as the job is done, and the freelance half thinks the other walks in at 9 and leaves at 5 no questions asked.
They both have their pros and cons and depending on how high on the spectrum of burn out you are ... they both kind of suck in their own right.
I wish I had time to freelance to make extra cash, I work usually 50-60 hours a week and more during peak times.
It sucks, haha.

i am wrapping up this easy project and i am in the process of writing up a contract for the next one. like joyride said, i'd rather be doing work but without a contract, i'll be asking for a lot of troubles. my potential client is somewhat notorious for being a monster. i hope she'll like me so i'll have an easy time.

we are fortunate to have the moonlighting option .. as opposed to say .. um .. like other jobs.
okay there's no bright side.
- joyride0
agree with the moonlighting thang (sorry listening to 50 Cent). If you think about it, what's our overhead on making xtra money... time. pretty good mark-up if you got it. +1 if you've got some cool clients
- mrdobolina0
Im dealing with a realtor in chicago, an artist that is a straight up freak and some banners for the lottery and movies that are currently showing, not one of them are cool. Like I said before, Im taking a month off of freelance in julyaugust.

we should create a network to pass overflow too. Of course, I say that, but I'm picky as hell to how i want the client handled and the work done... but, i can think of a few people on here that I would trust. If your not driven/reliable don't fucking bother...

happiness = not doing job
job = not happiness
so think:
doing = neutral
job = bad
not = good
not doing = good neutral
doing job = neutral bad
neutral = doing
job = bad
bad = job
doing = neutral
just do it.
