Anyone else have them? Due to my financial irresponsibility, I have a couple of tax returns to lodge and pay, and a whole bunch of BAS Statements that I haven't even lodged (for you fellow Aussies out there).
My stomach is churning and I keep avoiding the issue...I have a knot in my stomach akmost all day, every day. I know I need to fix things...I just to get around to it...
Anyone else have tax woes?

I had the inland revenue after me for £6.5k recently but it was because I was registered as self employed and they'd taken a wild stab at my tax bill because I'd not filled in a tax return as I'd given up freelancing (and being self employed) ages ago.
I kind of left it because I knew I didn't owe it but it needed sorting anyway.
Anyway, all sorted now, no bill so all is good but I can't advise strongly enough for you not to ignore the issue. If you need help, I think there are agencies who provide free advice if you can't afford an accountant to help but don't leave it whatever you do.

I feel you there. There are two things certain in life and they are death and taxes. I avoided for a bit, getting settled into a new country, starting a business etc. Came back to bite me but at least I'm paying it off now. Just do it get it off your chest, get the bill and then work out a plan to pay it off.

yeah I left mine too because the company sorts out my tax... but I still have to fill one in being a director of a company... they can get really shitty... but as soon as you send a return they lay off, especially when you owe them bugger all...

I feel for you.
my advice for all it's worth..Take a step back & sort this out now, pull a sicky tomorrow, get up at 6am & don't leave the house till it's done.
You'll make yourself ill worrying like that - once you've sorted it you'll feel fantastic.
good luck.

step 1. get an accoutant.
step 2. file on time so u don't have to pay any penalties and interest.

Jamble - where's the best for free advice? The accoutant I went to seemed to want to charge too much for my liking.

I feel the pain...
did a ton of freelance last yr to pay for a blinging ring for the future (and now) wife.
Paying taxes this year for all that freelance made me cry. I could have bought a damn fat ass LCD HD 42" TV for the amount I gave the gov :(

you need to write off more then
- nooner0
if the client doesn't 1099 you is there any reason why you should report to the gov?
- Clear0
Oh I wrote off a computer, monitor, printer etc.. I wrote off everything I had records for. I think really what hurt me was the freelance kicked me up to a higher tax bracket :(

you should open SEP account and max it out. u can put upto 25% of your income. that'll reduce your taxable income significantly.
also, you are saving for your future. and what's even better? on 2010, u can rollover SEP to rothIRA, meaning that when u convert, u have to pay tax on the amount but after that no taxes! you can save soooo much on this. but then again, congress may change this before it even kicks in.
