my friend!NO, honestly it sucks looking for an apt. I did it every year for 6 years for various reasons. Get all your paper work and money together so that when you see a place you like you can jump on it.

nyc is rough, but for apartment hell nothing will ever beat the dot-com heyday in san francisco. good places were so scarce that people would show up with a credit report, their last 5 years tax returns, and a duffle bag full of cash.

i moved from the upper east side to williamsburg a few months ago.. tons more space (found an amazing deal though).. alot of young artists and interesting people there... (also a ton of hipster kids rocking on someone else's dime) but hey move in and come drink on our roof deck.

Red Hook, Astoria and Jersey City (no further than Grove St.) are all "up and coming". I'm kinda partial to JC after having lived in Williamsburgh and Manhattan. 10 minutes from my door to the WTC, 15 minutes to the West Village.
The only problem is it's in Jersey :(

balls, i'm moving from the SF area so i've had to deal with the apartment bullshit.
I'm heading to Brooklyn and Astoria tomorrow, i'll check out the other areas as well.
