I need to replace two crappy lacie 500gb external hardrives that are not working. Anyone have any suggestions for a dependable external HD??

buy an empty HD box and a quality HD of your choice. it takes 2 min. to put em together.

I'm replacing them at work so i doubt they'll let me build one, though that's probably the best overall solution...

have lacie really gotten that bad? i've had two going on three years transporting them almost everyday to and from school and never had a problem but have only heard horrible things about them recently.
*knocks on wood.

THEY SUCK. i went through year long battle with those fuckers to replace two 500's i had that kept crashing for no reason. ridiculous. i will never buy another product from those cunts. they wouldn't replace or give me my money back.

I dont have anything good to say about them either, or bad really. In a work environment whrer ea D2 250gb was on 24/5 they would never last more than 2 years, ever, went through a bunch of them. All FW400 some 800.
Ive heard Lacie Porsche ones are the ones tat fail the most. don't consider those, they look nice but they are evil.
Tiger supposedly makes a drive last even less cause spotlight causes it to always be indexing and it makes a difference in a drives life, noticeable if you've been dealing with them for years. pre tiger performance and life and after tiger. WHATEVER.

These guys make some badass products. I have used the G-Raid and own a G-Drive. Highly dependable and very sexy as well.

weird, i have 2 lacie drives and i'm love them. getting scared now.
- Art_Ninja0
Barbatastic - I urge you to at lease back them up to DVD.
chimchim- i was looking into G-tech. how long have you had experience with them?

I used a G-Raid last year for about 3 months to manage 400gb of uncompressed SD video. It performed flawlessly. A co-worker of mine purchased the 500gb G-Drive and he has worked it to death for 6 months. I purchased a 250gb G-Drive (FW 400&800) last month and only turn it on on occasion to backup. Do it!

Id suggest you get a Lian Li EX 125 enclosure review here
http://www.virtual-hideout.net/r…
you can use it for hdd and dvd recorders. if you wanna get a hdd get a decent hdd and put it in that enclosure... enclosures are expensive though but since you can reuse them they are worth the investment

Maxtor. Got two, third on the way, one is 2.5 yrs, one 1.
Seagate just bought Maxtor, too. Seagate has just released the first HD with the perpendicular recording technology - 750gigs in one drive for about $550. I pretty good steal.

mbr... thats funny you like Maxtor. I only had 3 drives fail me, all Maxtors. They replaced 2 of them, with seagates. So I thought, they even know their junk and don't send em' out. But i've stopped buying them just for that... and i've never had a problem since.

hmm, i've had a maxtor 250gb for like 3-4 years now - i've never had a single issue. i'll be needing another one soon, and i was thinking that the lacie was the best choice, but after reading everyone's comments, i have no idea what to get.

Honestly I would go with an enclosure and add your hd's to it. Its cheaper too I think.
I just ordered this today:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Cu…I like the idea of having an IDE & SATA interface. We'll see how it goes

127 or 125
make sure to get recent versions with LED lights older ones dont have them... anyway you can use it for both hdd and dvdr/cdr so when the hdd goes and u want a dvdr burner or blue ray that willl still work right now id go with the one that just has a usb 1.0/2.0 cause it supports sata and sataII the other one dosnt support SATA but does have firewire but only 400.
- twoismtwoism0
actually it does support fw800 i was wrong they must have updated them

new one with led lights looks like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
