Hire that architect. Hire us.
Seriously, it takes years (7 years of school for me - all architecture), then years in the field to understand it and create something of quality that meets your needs and works well as a design.
We have a prefab duplex that will be going up here in Denver and are working on a few other residential projects along the 'Dwell' lines (I caution you on over generalizing that, though).
Don't underestimate what it takes. Gather your ideas (sites, magazines, sketches, etc.) and bring them to an architect you feel would work well with them (did I mention you could hire us?).
You will end up with a superior home that was designed with you (and your family?), in mind. Don't settle for some generic cookie-cutter home and don't settle for a second rate architect (while cost is an issue, there are others, like us, that are just starting our businesses and can afford you to give you quality at a good price).
Feel free to shoot me any questions about my partner and I or just general questions about architecture, about the process, etc.
You are headed in the right direction by asking questions.
Cheers

mbr, any local prefab in the denver area worth looking at?

you mean built already? There is one duplex (same developer that hired us) that might be done by now (it was off/on for a while). Send me an email - I need to contact him anyway.
Not sure what else. I know there are tons of prefabs, it's just usually the developers hide that fact (ie they look like traditional homes, not Dwell-ish). You'd be surprised at home many homes/developments are prefab, just no one knows once they are done (and they can have the homes completely done so quickly you'd miss it).
There are a few decent homes and developments going up around town, too. Many here in the highlands (not prefab, though).
I know one of the prefab companies we have been working with were very interested in creating more modern homes. There's certainly a market.

You should drop Christos Marcopoulos (brother of Ari) a line.
He designed this house
http://www.landliving.com/articl… for my buddy in Whistler and is currently designing another one for him in Nicaragua. He does amazing work.
