the best way to learn IMO is to understand the basics, variables, numbers, arrays and boolean values. Movieclips, their properties and levels i.e (_root) and then go through tuts at http://www.kirupa.com and http://www.gotoandlearn.com and then as said above just set yrself small tasks.
if you get stuck, post on forums like here and just ignore the c*unts

dude, put your hat in front of you. this is a good question, why do you want to learn specifically AS? Put your cons and pros, make your decision according to that. if you want to learn the basics I would say don't waste your time, learn management instead of that. but if you are going to putyourself under the hood then start learning Object Oriented Programming approach. Don't bother with syntax, syntax is bullshit, try to learn how you should approach a project, what should be your objects how you should build your methods in those objects, how you are going to structure your datas, those are the ins and outs of programming in general. learn those and then you will like what you are learning and outcome will be benefical in the long run.

I agree with undo for a basics. But you should even start more basic then that. Like how programing work in general. If you don't know that, the basics of flash will just lead to bad flash programming in general. Build your foundation first!
