I have a site update gig for an event planner, weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, simshas etc.
She sent me the source files, fonts etc. Everything seems cool, right?
WRONG!
Every symbol is named Symbol 1, symbol 2, symbol 3, files are missing, fuck this sucks, I have been looking at it for 4 fucking hours and there is no way that I can make these updates. This is the lame.
I'm one second away from emailing her and telling her that there is no way I can do these updates, but still keep looking into these nasty FLA's. All effects have been done in photoshop, not in flash.

actually a profitable one, if this is by the hour
go through the scenes mc and what not by double clicking it get into every piece and name it appropriately
recreate the missing files as needed

not sure about that, all of the bitmaps have been broken apart in flash and the source isnt there in the files she sent. there are all these wack glow effects on everything. Thanks for the boost though player. Im pissed. I cant honestly bill her for these 4 hours.

tell her the file is corrupted and won't open. You'll have to redo it and that will cost more.

my personal physician drhuxtable told me that I should look at it again in the morning and then decide whether or not Im going to turn the job down, with a clear head.

absolutely you can bill her for these hours. stop right now and contact her with the news of what a mess it is and how much longer it will take to fix. or, simply don't do it.
don't sell yourself short, your time is valuable to you so it should be to her. if it is not and you cannot work out a deal, don't do the job. but if you don't, explain that you will be happy to do it but the difficulty justifies the cost.
you wouldn't expect to get an engine overhaul for the price of an oil change would you? same deal.

nothing worse than somebody elses flas. but surely you can charge her for the 'getting up to speed on the files' time. should be a given.

amen brotha. i won't take on other peoples fla's anymore because of that. html/css source, at least you know what you're getting into, but with flash there's too many ways to get the same result. have another beer and pat yourself on the back :)
