So what is up with wine corks nowadays being artificial, plastic ones?
Yes, I'm sober.

I was at some wine tasting seminar and they explained it.
I acted like I was paying attention, obviously I wasn't...

1 in 12 bottles are normally "corked" costs the industry quite a bit. Screw top will be the final result I think

It's to prevent wine getting "corked". Bad cork can rot into wine and make it taste foul.
It's a good idea, but not liked by aficionados...

fucking screw top.
Plastic I can just about cope with, but screw top just takes all the ceremony out of it.

Prevents tainting.

Because natural cork lies to you.

The only good thing that will come from screw top is not being caught short without a corkscrew...

the bad thing is that I will be drinking the wine before getting it home...

Well, what do you know. Thanks for explaining.

Interesting fact: Most wine you buy is not intended to be drunk for a couple years. It's supposed to Mature... ok not so interesting. but still, most people drink it before one's supposed to.

(May 24 06, 08:17)Depends on the wine type:
wines that must be consumed in short time may also have artificial corks, so there's reduced risk that the wine is cork-falvoured
(i.e: white wines, young wines (novello) and not-so-expensive wines in general)but for the wines that has to be kept aging in basaments, natural cork is still necessary cause the wine has to breathe

I want to get a seperate wine cooler (mini-fridge with see through front) and fill it up with Mad Dog, and Thunderbird.
So when people come over, I can be like, 'Oh yes Buffy, and would you like some wine with our gourmet meal?'
Pop open the door and go, 'Oh yes, this will do .... a fine 2006 Mad Dog Red Grape 20/20'.

Artificial corks were actually designed for slower maturing wines I thought. Natural cork can rot and produce fungus over time.

this may have sense for expensive wines, but on the other hand i didn't see any bottle over 30 Euros (Italian wine prices) that has an artificial cork

soaking cork is the best.
