So what is up with wine corks nowadays being artificial, plastic ones?

    Depends on the wine type:
wines that must be consumed in short time may also have artificial corks, so there's reduced risk that the wine is cork-falvoured
(i.e: white wines, young wines (novello) and not-so-expensive wines in general)

but for the wines that has to be kept aging in basaments, natural cork is still necessary cause the wine has to breathe
