forgot to mention that if you're going to be using the special mouse that works with the tablet, you'll need an 8x6 size to be comfortable with that.
you can get away with the smallest one if you don't mind setting the tablet aside and using your old mouse and switching back and forth between the 2.

the big ones are just right for specialist stuff like car design where you want to draw a car in side view like you used to on A3 vellum. GM buys hundreds of them...and now hundreds of Cintiqs..
