just finished a project for a client, wanted the site done in a week (like all my clients) this is what I showed them as an initial design after a day of though
the header was to be flash, then the bottom HTML cause he wanted to update it himself and didnt want to pay me to build a CMS. I thought it was an alright design and I was going to have a plane fly around in the bg somehow. they hated it, well they said they dont understand it. then they had a meeting and gave me a small diagram of what they wanted. and this is what it ended up as http://sincerelyhiten.com/llf/
now im sad. I cant use that in my folio.

You can use that in your folio. Just keep it after all the better stuff.
- Jaline0
By the way, I really liked your version better.

You did a fine job with what was requested of you
cheers on a job well done

nothing is a wasted effort, do it your way but only better, then put it in your folio. in our profression, both the client and the designer can be wrong as they interpret the brief from different angles. Have no regrets, only good work.

It's not THAT bad. It's a bit dark and dreary, and no contrast, but some of the flash elements are nice.

The original was much easier to read.

you will go blind trying to read that on a pc in daylight

make it a case study in your portfolio, show your initial designs and stretches

Its not that bad, although i really liked your idea better.
i've noticed a lot of bands seem to follow this kind of pattern in terms of being very specific about a look that's less than stellar.
i think the work is still good, and def. portfolio worthy. just another example you can use to sell your skills.

oft times in an interview I am asked about this exact scenario. You have a great example of how you made a good design and the client dumbed it down.
This is an example that you can give the client what he/she wants, even if you know that your design is superior.
A Project Manager / Producer will see that you are talented AND can take direction. Put them both in the folio.

Case Study = Good Idea.
"Look what kick ass shit I came up with, and how lame ass the client was and didn't want their audience to be blown right out of their chairs!"
Still nice though hiten, regardless of what you initially envisioned.

i just feel bad cause people will see that without knowing the story behind it and think im a lesser designer.
- Ramanisky20
no they wont ....
They can tell when someone has skillz
- Bacillo30
they're both good dude. but your original was pretty bad ass. you should show that one in your portfolio and say thats what they picked. haha. no ones gonna know the difference anyways.
- Jaline0
who bumped the thread?
weird...
- radar0
Yeah, just show the initial concept.

if all original comps went through as the finals, there would be world peace and naked women handing out joints.
welcome to the client suck.

the only thing i hate about putting work that isnt live on my folio is that people might think its a school project or something or its fake.
i hate everyone.
