so a my client has a flash website and wants to be able to provide URLs that go to specific sections of that site. Specifically, they want some sort of a macro that would open the site and go to a specific section as if the user were clicking to it
I've never seen/heard of that before. Any thoughts or suggestions?

easy.
use coldfusion or something to pass a variable. so flash will read it and then open up the specific section requested.

I had this exact question come up when I was 99% done a website andd had showed the client numerous revisions, so it never happened. Great to know this can be done.

thanks tk, makes sense!

yeah, link can be like
yourdomain.com/index.cfm?section...
and have flash programed so it'll read section variable then assign whatever.
probably there are better ways.

yeah, now that I think about it, I should be able to do the same thing with php and not have to fuss with cf

Pass in the http referrer from your server side markup(php, asp) into flash. then have flash process the swf to go the appropriate section.

isn't there any easier way? deep linking? i swear there is an easier way to do this. all which can be done in flash and only flash. maybe i am wrong though...

We do something for http://www.finalcut-edit.com whereby each director can have their own homepage and have it on their biz card etc... eg... http://www.finalcut-edit.com/Ric…
so that this is usable for Flash we put this in the .htacess file...
Redirect permanent '/Rick Russell' http://www.finalcut-edit.com/ind…
Redirect permanent '/rick russell' http://www.finalcut-edit.com/ind…
Redirect permanent /RickRussell http://www.finalcut-edit.com/ind…
Redirect permanent /rickrussell http://www.finalcut-edit.com/ind…You can then parse the editor name to the flash file
Probably more advanced ways of doing it too..

Javascript:
if (document.URL.indexOf('?') != -1) { var goToPage = document.URL.substring(document... + 1, document.URL.length); }
Then pass the variable, goToPage into flash using swfObject if you use it, or another method.

yeah, just use js if yer scerd of the other languages. I would use that anyway
- ornj0
or if there is no other reason to use the other languages

big difference though, something like php is server-side, js is client-side.
