I've asked this before, but now I'm really running out of time.
I'm on a mac and I've never had this problem on a PC before.
I have taken a screenshot of a pink object with a dropshadow on a dark grey backgroud. When I try to save it optimized for web (gif) I get all these weird colours in the palette, yellows, greens, blues you name it.
I use the same optimizing settings as usual (works fine), the difference is that this is a screenshot which for some reason gives me all of these weird colours.
WHY?!

I don't see the problem unless it makes you files size 100% bigger
- lnu0
The problem is it messes up the gradient in the dropshadow since all the different shades of grey to black that SHOULD have been there have been replaced by all the colours of the f-ing rainbow.

save it as a jpeg.

is it set to custom under the color table bit of the optimize palatte?

I've also tried to save it as a max. qualite jpg and then optimize the jpg to gif - with the same results...
what have I done wrong?

check if its CMYK or RGB
your document that is
- lnu0
it's RGB.
I've tried to save it as a jpg on a friends computer and open it there but it still does this? It's got to be embedded in the file somehow.

one thing happens is wher eyou took the screen shot.
if its an LCD screen than it does come up weird.
why not check ur screen setting on your machine for photoshop.
make sure its not soemthing werid
- lnu0
no, I've tried different screen settings without luck.
I can optimise another picture just fine but as soon as I paste the screendump, or a copy from the jpg, it screws up.
I'm going home to my PC in 5 minutes.

gif files aren't meant for files with gradients or massive colour ranges. if you do use the gif format for these style of images you'll end up with the mentoned problems PLUS the filesize will actually be larger than a jpeg with medium quality settings. the illusion that gif files are smaller than jpegs is not always true.

Try Selective rather than Custom and make sure it's set at 256 colours.
- lnu0
It's no problem with the gif 'cause I only have the gradient and pink and grey but I still get colours that aren't even in the picture (see screenshot above)
256 colours - check
Selective(Custom - makes no difference.AAAAHHHRFGFDHG!

thank you all anyway.
