gif files aren't meant for files with gradients or massive colour ranges. if you do use the gif format for these style of images you'll end up with the mentoned problems PLUS the filesize will actually be larger than a jpeg with medium quality settings. the illusion that gif files are smaller than jpegs is not always true.
