the official term for the screen is "Kernel Panic"
can sometimes be caused by Peripheral drivers
i had it happening on a brand new intel mac mini :/
fixed now tho

I have had this on my mac too.
And then last week the bloody beach ball came up and stayed up for like 10 minutes when I went to adjust a type size in InDesign, I couldn't do shit, so I had to do a hard shutdown, and it wouldn't go past the grey apple screen.
Tried going into single user mode and running fsck, and I also tried running the panther cd and repairing permissions, and then did a hardware test, had no problems with any of that. Turns out the SMART feature on the hard drive for reporting errors is next to useless and my hard drive was actually dying. Lost all data. Had to get a new hard drive last friday. Thats about the 5th thing to go wrong with my powerbook.
Luckly anything important I had on my trusty and much more reliable PC :)

i had the same problem with my PB, it was being caused by a problem communicating with my DV cam via firewire...definitely try unplugging all peripherals.
Also, if you boot from the OSX install CD, you can get to disk utility from the top menu to check the hard drive health

u need to erase your porn collection from your hd.

yeah its suck
i cant seem to fix it

damn you got the worst luck with apple!
seriously not trying to bring this into a mac pc thing but i think you really need to consider going to the other. your luck with apple has been like 10x compared to most.

I get that about once every 6 months. My Powerbook locks up quite often, but only when I plug the power cable in. Very annoying, especially since it's a crap shoot if it'll do it or not. :\

yeah lvl
i spent 3500 for this one
and spent about extra 2000 on it.but its so pretty hahaahah
except that its bend due to over heating
- lvl_130
one word comes to mind: ouch!
it is pretty...but damn man! that is a lot of money!
not like you don't already know that though.

Just a note, as I said before, if you still can't get into osx, don't put too much reliability on Disk Utility saying SMART is verified, or that the Hardware Test is reporting that the Hard disk is working properly. Said the same thing about mine and it was caput.

so Neg
u think its Kenel ?
or just HD failure?
i did hardware test 10 times, found nothing wrong.

i am buying 1000 dollar pc desktop, so i can play games on it also !!
- NegativeSpace0
Well I found that I could run stuff from the ROM without a hitch, the hardware test, the Tiger setup, Disk Utility, but when it came to reading the hard drive, it couldn't do anything.
After nothing worked, I tried to do an Archive & Install of tiger, which puts all your stuff in a folder and installs a panther. Once it got to disk verification after it checks the media (the tiger disk) it just sat there and did not go further.
If your laptop won't run the setup from the cd or disk utility, you might have a problem with memory or the logic board or something.
Can you get into safe mode?
(in my case since it required to run from the HD I couldn't)
- ********0
it runs on CD, but cant access files in HD.
no it wont even get to safe mode. it craps out before that
i really think its HD dying.. AGAIN
and possiblly something wrong with the board..
- NegativeSpace0
Yeah thats exactly what happened to me.
I was going to install the HD myself but I called computer systems central at college and spadina (you are in Toronto right?) and they said they would install it for me if I bought the hard drive from them. They did that in about 20 minutes, short and sweet. If you call ask for a guy named Dan.
Then I just plugged my hard drive into an external enclosure to get the data off. In my case I was only able to get a few imp word docs, but for the most part I lost everything.
I bought the external usb enclosure just for this, so if you decide to go this route and want to borrow my laptop hd enclosure if you don't have one, let me know, your welcome to.

thx Neg
i am just gonna take this back to CSC cause this HD is a replacement HD that i bought from them after my last HD burn out.
well hope this works.. only thing that i am worried about files under different user names..
i got all the files out from my main user but have about another 40 gigs from other users..
o well
lesssons learned over past 3 years
- NegativeSpace0
When I plugged my drive in and accessed it via the external enclosure, i could access all the users files. This was using MacDrive on my pc.
- ********0
oo ok i will try that.. see if that works..
bahhhhh
thx man
- lvl_130
good luck at any rate dinky!
computers are like crosswalks. we all got to use them.
