3ds max - probably a few more $ than Maya although you can trial it and its super powerful

thanks, do you have a preference for which is easier to learn, and use?

i'm learning maya at the mo, it's really incredible what you can do with it but quite difficult for my tiny brain to grasp. sooooo complicated. i mean i taught myself AE but this is something else.

Max is easier to learn than Maya.
Softimage XSI is pretty good too, but also with a slightly steeper learning curve than Max.
But if you're dedicated you should be able to pick up any of these packages.

animating characters using 3D is no easy job at all. if you've got alot of time on your hands go for it. I've using max for about 5 years now and Maya and Houdini for about 2. Maya & Houdini are the daddy for character animation and visual effects. Max is mainly used in the gaming and architecture industry (aswell as visual effects etc...).
To start with i'd go with Max as once you've learnt it you can transfer the same disciplines from one program to another.
oh and Lightwave sux so does cinema 4d... they are bordering on redundant.

I know Max is hard ( I did it from manual) and I think they are all generally fairly involved. I've heard other ppl say Maya might be slightly easier but I think the main obstacle is grapsing the concepts and then its how many little buttons and settings there are to take in.

If you just want to jump into something Poser is a good program to start out with.
The learning curve is less steep and less $$$.
