On a mac, can you back up applications folders? Will they install on a new computer?

Most of the time, yes. Some apps require an actual installation package while many others are (mostly) self contained .app packages.
So for example, you can keep a backup of Firefox and drag/drop onto your new computer and it will run just fine. However, preferences, bookmarks, etc. will not be retained. These sorts of files are commonly stored in the user library folder in Preferences and Application Support.
On my backup hard drive I keep copies of most of the applications I always install right after a clean format and it's a great way to get up and running quickly.

best thing is to connect two macs by firewire. it will only copy the whole user at once, but has the advantage that everything will work.
i even have 2 snuggles accounts on my laptop.
we just hooked up by firewire.:)

I've been using this app to make bootable backups to a firewire drive. So far, so good. It's a tight little app.

What i do is partition my drive into 2 drives, one for OS and one for work.
After this you can boot up from your startup disc, open disc utility and make a .dmg of your OS drive. From there you can save to a external drive or a DVD.
Once this is done, you can always restart your computer, open disc utilty and chosse "restore from disc image"
works like a dream.

copy+paste+select replace not good enough?

You don't need to back up applications cause you would have the install discs anyway............ unless you lost them you silly banana.

(May 7 06, 14:14)Any decent back-up/restore application will only backup directories you specify and only files which have been updated. Much more efficient and arguably more reliable. It may also schedule and automate the entire process.

(May 7 06, 13:53)The point i'm trying to make is that it takes everything i the Hard Drive like apps and stuff and saves it to a .dmg, so at all times you have 2 backups on 2 separate drives and / or a dvd
so if 1 hard drive goes up, you still have a separate copy, and vice versa.
