    Most of the time, yes. Some apps require an actual installation package while many others are (mostly) self contained .app packages.

    So for example, you can keep a backup of Firefox and drag/drop onto your new computer and it will run just fine. However, preferences, bookmarks, etc. will not be retained. These sorts of files are commonly stored in the user library folder in Preferences and Application Support.

    On my backup hard drive I keep copies of most of the applications I always install right after a clean format and it's a great way to get up and running quickly.
