Cash flow is important - having some regular, established clients is also going to help.
Downside is that you are responsible for everything and I mean everything IT support/marketing/accounts/paint... your office etc. Some of these are fun, some you can pay someone to do it for you (if you have the cash) and some you just have to do yourself and learn the hard way.
I've been running my company for over four years now and it's been good. Financially better off than I've ever been. Time is more flexible but you need to devote more of it to your business, but since its yours it doesn't actually "feel" like work all the time.
My brain is always thinking about the business too - so that may be a downside - (when I have an issue I seem distracted what ever I'm doing which can annoy those around you!!)
