(May 5 06, 03:40)Thank you Dancer and Honest. It's on my desk as we speak :) But I thought it was interesting to ask around at NT as well.

I'm only one person, but i constantly hire out the same 1-2 people almost every day.
Disadvantages: doing all the paper work.
Advantages: working with clients you want. i have found it's more satisfying for myself when working for clients i want to support rather than working for someone else for some client i'm not a fan of.

I'll be out of this full time nonsense next friday, and can't wait. I'll be full time in my own agency as of June 1 and have started ramping up with more marketing etc.
My motivations for doing so are numerous, but the biggest ones are in line wit what SecretPenguin said.
I worked for a design agency while in school and they did great work, but more than doing great work, they truely cared about design principles, they truely cared about learning, about their clients, and most of all, they truely cared about the impact that their work had on the end user. I've been fighting to get back to that environment for years, to no avail. So I will recreate it, and I will be successful.
In addition to that, I have 2 babies, and have been told a million times that you have much more fleibility (not more time off) when you are the boss.
Paper work is not going to kill me, sitting at this BS dead-end design job will.

Getting paid to do what you love.
Clients that don't know what they want but don't like anything you've done. Kill Kill Kill

Pro's: Money - Control - Pride - excitement - no boss.
Neg's: STRESS - sacrifice of free time - risk - rollercoaster - responsible for others.

America...
yeah health insurance will suck. but if you can afford it, do it.

or if you get it from your wife's job!!

+ = control, and if there is no work it's your own fault, not the company.
- = all the costs you will incure being a small startup.
go for it. it'll make you happy.
- stevegee0
5k of those startups that nooner mentioned are tax deductible as start up costs, the rest are typical overhead costs, you need the write-off's anyhow!!!
I'm doing it... friday is my last day!!!

I do believe health insurance is cheaper in the netherlands. and maybe even better? but that's what i've been told..

I have had experience with starting my own studio, its great fun the whole process, until it gets to bank related issues, business plan, tax, register name and so on....the very downsite it´s the difficulty in getting clients and having a workflow capable of feeding everyone, the business development side of it! the good side is you can work on your style, being your own art director, and deciding your own process of work...setting up the studio and having to be your own IT team can be fun, there is a lot to learn but very frustrating at times....as time goes by it´s also very rewarding seeing that baby growing....my baby seats in the uk and its growing, I am out and only see it from out, my envolvment now its purely administrative/business related leaving the creative worrk to other younger and stronger mainly students....great....
