after graduating in gaphic design, and deciding to take a year off to work a "less stressful" job, build an interactive component to my portfolio and really figure out if design is for me, i now want to make the return to design. i am looking for reasons to motivate myself to activley persue design before i get stuck doing somehthing i don't like. so make me a believer!

if you need others to motivate you to design, boy are you in trouble and design is definitely not for you. i design bc i love designing and drawing and i think other designers would agree.
go sell cars or something schleprock.

Go team design!... err...

Sucks just as much as anything else does after 6 years

all things are hard to start just like that thesis or website. Maybe go to a few lectures or design talks or an exhibition. Try and get some work experience someplace and absorb some of that atmosphere.
best of luck!

(May 3 06, 07:23)all depends on the company(s) you work for and the clients you have.
yours must suck.
i've been doing this for seven years and love it as mush as the first day i started.

don't get me wrong, i love design, it's all i do on my free time. i worked at a design firm right out of school for 3 months but couldn't get used to the work environment of design. maybe i just didn't give it enough of a chance, or maybe it was the firm, but i felt like i wasn't given the chance to express my ideas openly.

Maybe you need to find out where you would be more comfortable. Design Studio, Big Ad Agency, Small Ad Agency, In-house, etc...
Personally for me a large Ad agency wasn't for me. I've done in-house, small ad agencies and design studios. I prefer small ad shops and design studios. Keep in mind tho, I've been doing this for over 10yrs.

the old grandmother of Andre Emmerich, dealer of pre-colombian artifacts and then highbrow paintings, gave him this advice:
"When they give , take
When they take, fight"

The fact that you're a year out of school and still unsure of what to do and need others to motivate you tells me that this career isn't right for you.
Self motivation is the number one key to success in design or any other business, imo.
If you find the workplace to stifling maybe you should do creative work in your spare time while pursuing another career. At least until the right opportunity comes along.

Wish I could help you. I've been out of school for 2 years now and still haven't found the perfect fit in the industry. I think I've learned that I'm either looking for something that doesn't exist, or something that happens to only a few lucky souls.
