So as most us strive to be successful in our careers I have finally reached a point where I'm just about at art director status...the only thing missing is the title but now that I'm here...I hate it. Its far less creativity and far more management. Anyone else have this issue?

It only gets worse. I went from AD>CD>VP of Creative Services (whatever that is...) and was bored to tears. The meetings, the gladhanding, the lack of actual projects to dive deep into...
Now I'm (purposely) Sr. Designer and couldn't be happier...

just comes to terms with the fact that you are a hapless, glorified monkey that is error-prone and mean little to the outcome of a society which is ultimately doomed. You're a spec within a spec.

I was once complaining to someone (15 years older than me) about how i have to work so hard just to move up the ladder one notch. He told me.."wait until you get to the top and realize that you wasted your life climbing a mountain of shit".
moral: you can never win. you will only suffer.

I was at several large Fortune 500's as AD/CD (big media and pubishing companies) but to get the role I wanted, I eventually found a small design/tech shop to work for. It's a mix of inhouse support and a stable of Web/Design /Marketing /Advert clients they already had or those that I brought to the party.

I know a few 40+ year-old senior designers who are perfectly content not being in concept/strategy or management.

I think that's where I'm headed...back to Senior Designer.
Question on concepting and strategist positions (b/c thats not incorporated into my job...happens in behavior). How do your company's handle concepting and strategy? Is it its own department?

the more you master what you love, the closer you are to management. this is why managers suck bawz

It depends on the company. I'm an Interactive AD and very hands on - I wouldn't want it any other way.

Do this:
1. Drink an entire bottle of Champagne (cheap variety) within a 5 minute period
2. Eat an entire box of Ju-Ju Bee's within a 2 minute period
3. Spin around in a circle for 15 minutes
4. Fall downrepeat steps 3 and 4 until you appreciate your life before step 1.
