sucks :(
It's different here in Canada since not as much of it revolves around sports, and tuition costs less in general, but grants and scholarships can be really annoying to get.

Students will qualify if they:
_Have an advanced or honors high school diploma, as offered in at least 19 states.
_Completed the courses of the State Scholars Initiative, a congressionally backed program. It requires students to take four years of English, three years of math, three years of lab science, three and a half years of social studies, and two years of a language other than English. Fourteen states have the program now, and eight more are starting soon.
_Finished a set of courses "similar" to the State Scholars curriculum.
_Taken at least two Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses and passed the tests in both subjects.

YESSSSSSS! I'm amazed America actually wants their children to succeed - you could have fooled me w/how weak the support is for a real education system. People should be held to standards if they want to acheive a certain 'level'.

+That's not how I raised you. I always taught you that in this world you'll only get what you achieve. If you don't have the grades that say "I'm brain-surgeon material" - then you probably shouldn't be in the brain-surgeon training program.
Some people are 'more qualified' and therefor should actually 'deserve' a grant based on their hardwork, achievements and natural ability.
This is a good thing, dear. Where's your brother? He'll tell you the same.

"Republican lawmakers approved the program in December as part of a bill that otherwise slashed almost $13 billion in college spending. "
they are asshats. it doesn't matter what the qualifications are. $ won't guarantee that students will be accepted.
states don't get enough, if any cash from the fed for primary school. they would rather spend the cash on wars, while giving huge tax breaks to the rich. sickening. no wonder the slanty reds will take over

How can they say you have to take approved programs that are only offered in 19 states?
fucking institutionalized racialists

+it sounds like the program is just getting under way - give it a chance, if it's right - more states will adopt it.
not everyone is as able and smart as the next - I like the idea of weeding out a few geniuses.
