Anyone tell me a reason why I should spend a lot more and get the newer processor up to 2.7 dual instead of the 2.0, I mostly do print, interface design, and somtimes aheavy photoshop shit, is this monster machine which costs 1500 more gonna do me any good? Thanks as always.

get an imac.

no reason at all. Just upgrade your RAM to 1GB and you'll be set.

computer equipment always goes out of date the month you buy it. But it you could buy what's going to be great down the road now. would you? I would spend the 1500, your going to write it off anyway right?

i'm kinda holding out for the intel powermacs and for adobe to get with the program and release intel native apps. prolly not for another six months or so.
so sense buying a powerpc mac now, it's gonna be obsolete technology soon (well, within the next two years).

I second all of that. I have an G5 imac with 1.5 gig of ram. Works great for all the same stuff. I have friends with the same setup but with the intel imac and they are saying that it's slower.
FYI - Adobe isn't releasing universal updates to all of their (including macromedia) stuff until next year. The boot camp should be more stable by then too.

Imac huh? so nogo on the G5,? Thanks guys

i'm on a dual 2ghz w/ 2GBs ram doing primarily print.. been serving me well daily for about 15 months strong.
if you gotta buy right now i wouldn't invest in the high end models; too much change happening with teh Intel flip. save the $1500 and you'll feel better about upgrading to a new Apple-Intel tower in 3-4 years time when all the kinks are worked out.

iMacs = poodles.

macbook pro 15" + 20" cinema display.
sure, apps may be slower right now, but you get the best of both worlds.

well I have been PC at home, MAC at work my whole life, now that it looks like work will be mostly at home, Im going to be fulltime MAC, Im here for you peoples wisdom in this, so let me know where to go and what to do, I appreciate the hell out of it
- Sharif0
also would you go with the 30 display or 2 20s?
- blackspade0
my experience with intel mac is opposite,
have dual processor mac mini with 2g's RAM and it seems to be way faster than my Dual G5,
go figure.
- blackspade0
*Dual intel Mac Mini that is^

i'm not one to recommend online vendors because i always like to purchase at local dealers where you can haggle for good prices on the extras.
RAM is notoriously overpriced at apple.com.
you're only getting 1 extra stick so the burn isn't so bad, but i'd still recommend just getting the base model from Apple and getting 3 additional 512s elsewhere.
+ personally i'd go for 2x 20" instead of 30".

yeah Im liking the 2 20s, I have a mediacenter PC in here as well, and thats what I run the cable through, so I was thinking about the TV side of things, but working with dual monitors is so much more efficient at least for me

Not to turn this into a PC?Mac thread, but you said you use a PC and Mac. I've done the same and find that PC's of the same spec/build are cheaper and noticebly faster. Do you just prefer to work on mac?
- Sharif0
yeah have had too many viruses eat shit up, or windows upgrades fuck up, I have a great machine, but I like the fact that a MAC is a little more stable and much more secure, but this could be an argument of course, its just personal preference
- Seanbot0
sharif, i would go with the two 20"s over the 30 if only because sitting infront of a single 30" display for 6 + hours a day is a bit overwhelming
