Is there such a thing?
- Jaline0
ummmm....yessss
- Jaline0
do I get a prize now?
- Crouwel0
philosophically speaking: no.
sorry.

Ha, i've had this argument before. I think that it's physically impossible to do something that doesn't give you pleasure on some level, even if it means temporary pain in order to feel good about yourself later.

Ture. True.

No they are no selfless acts.
Every single one that I pawn off as not thinking about only for myself for a change, has some way no matter how miniscule at first in directly helping me first and foremost.
- Jaline0
okay, I didn't think about it. I think Greedo is right.
I know when I help people there is some part of me that likes the satisfaction of doing that act afterwards.
Like when I gave blood last month. It made me feel REALLY good.
- zoiks0
HA! "Ture"
- grunttt0
masturb...
no wait, that's a self-act.

What about if you do something really good like save somebody from something which kills you straight afterwards before you have time to get some satisfaction about being a hero
- Jaline0
Then you will go to heaven, haha.

in some way everything we do can be considered a form of manipulation, but what about dying in place of another?
They say Jesus died on the cross for our sins in such a selfless act, but could one view that as the ultimate PR stunt, I mean - he rose again after three days, and he sure sold a lot of books after that.
- GreedoLives0
You'd be doing it out of concern for your fellow humans which makes you feel good if you do something for them.
There's always some sort of reward for us humans, that's just how we tick.

good one deadpixels... that's one to think on...
anyone?
- kelpie0
haha rasko, very preceptive
- zoiks0
Is it true then that you never do anything that you don't want to do?
- ross0
doesnt anyone else remember that scene where bruce willis stayed on the meteor so his daughter could marry some dude.
that was pretty selfless.
- kelpie0
no
- flavorful0
Dying for someone else is saving them, so in essence the reward is their continuation.
People I would die for (in no particular order):
No one.Okay, probably a few, I'm not a complete asshole. I'd probably do it without thinking and then immediately afterwards go, 'Damn it ... I really should have saved this for someone who would enjoy their life.'
- kelpie0
sorry ross, that wasn't aimed at you.
