anyone gotten one of the newer Iphoto books made from apple ?
good ? bad ?

Does your choice of books depend which version of iPhhoto you are using? - I don't think you can get the gray cover anymore. . . .
curious also - http://homepage.mac.com/rpirman/…

nice example.. just realized you can have your portfolio printed like this..
never looked at it this way before.

is it ok if you would order a book for commercial purposes though?

thanks crouwel, - and on your second question, why not? - maybe I don't understand what you are asking. (?) -

nevermind, i already found out.. the portfolio book already had "company details" as an option in the presets.. nice!
i am definitly going to try this.
you cannot use line-art (vector files) i guess? :/
what's the typical resolution for this if rasterized? (esp. if you use custom text..)
and you cannot change the font, right?
- arterie0
No, no, you can pretty much do anything you want, just don't use the "typography" area of your iPhoto bookmaking area. What I do is make a finished final "high rez" jpg. between 250-300 dpi in RGB color. They print from that, put all your layout, fonts, etc. on the PSD, include an imported vector into ps, then flatten all. It's not a spot color print. The quality is superb, I might ad. . . . .

so how is the quality of margins and cuts/bleeds?
if i want to create my own layout by submitting full bleed jpegs (rgb? really?) how will they not differentiate when cut by them? (you know if you juxtapose two self-created layouts!)
and thx for the help, i am stoked to try this!
also, i'd be interested in more examples (designer portfolio's pls!)..

the ratio of the page is slightly tricky. It is the generic or default of most all digital cameras. My first try I formatted a 11x8.5 template @ 300 dpi and then did all pages at that rez and size. (type also) Just keep in mind the crop, keep everything away from the edge at least 1/2 inch.
I have done many boks, and one other website I really love is shutterfly for books. It is run by Adobe. The website is http://www.shutterfly.com - you upload your images there, basically click and build on the site. It's very easy and the quality is just as good as Apple iPhoto. I've done around 10 or so there. the cards are super good too.
some pages of those books I did are here: http://gallery.passion4art.com/a…

I've never really looked into it, but that looks like a half decent price too.

It's an amazing price, especially for the quality and turnaround time, which is just a few days. - well for me anways, I live in the bay area, sf and the printing facitiliy is not far away.

i did not really worry about the ratio.. more about the fact if it will "jump" on a spread if you, for instance center the image within the final jpegs and have a grid like structure layed out..
so, if the next page is exactly aligned to the first..
ofcourse i will take the cuts into acount.. jsut worried about consistencies..
- arterie0
not sure about that, . . . i had fairly good luck, you might just do a small minimum page book to test.
- Crouwel0
i think i will do that, just an experimental thing..
can't wait!

and thx for the info!
i may bump this thread tomorrow if everyone is slacking on NT again to hear more stories and see more examples.

Have fun! - I am in the mood to do another one now :D

you are welcome! - email me if have anymore questions.

i am in the netherlands though, not sure if Shutterfly also covers Europe etc?
- arterie0
hmm, good question. - :\

i'll check that out. i prefer to use Apple's iPhoto now, as i can just create one bit by bit offline..
i just found out you can change settings and use any font you have for this.. was thinking of giving it a try on a few pages in my first tryout book.
have you ever done this?
- canuck0
I think you will find a lot of major photo labs etc. Do this now aswell, quality not 100% about mind you. I just checked and Blacks does it, though I think that is just a US/Canadian Chain.
