ts a shame scorsese didnt get the funding for the ending he wanted. would have made the movie an all-time classic.

you can tell during the movie how it was supposed to end with the build up. the gangs were supposed to get into a heated battle with themselves and the army and have a spectacular ending (according to the first script) but scorsese ran out of funding and spent too much of his own cash for it to be worth it so he just had the lame ending where the ship fires the cannons (which never happened). the events of the draft riots actually occured (the reason scrosese wanted to make the movie was to shed light on this event which was largely forgotten by the american public) and the ending was going to revolve around it.

scorsese needs to find a good writer. daniel day lewis was great and the art direction and costumes were very good. but it was like watching a gory Christmas Carol

the best scorsese movies are the ones he has a hand in writing (raging bull, goodfellas, casino)
'bringing out the dead' is very underrated as well.

I loved it in that old Sopranos episode (season 2?) where Christopher saw Scorsese on the red carpet and started yelling "Kundun", like suddenly he was going to stop and chat about Tibet.

A nice double feature one night when you're putzing around at home is Taxi Driver and Coppola's The Conversation, another underrated classic.

I saw in the DVD extras that Scorsese and Paul Schrader wanted Sport ( the pimp played by Harvey Keitel) to be a black guy, but they were afraid of inciting a race riot. I had forgotten how racist Travis Bickle was until this most recent viewing, and yet, I never felt like Keitel was very convincing. White guys playing pimps always turn into caricatures.
