I got a guitar a while back as a gift and have wanted to learn for some time. There's a ton of stuff on the internet and thousands of books, so I don't know where to start. Does anyone know of a good resource for learning basic chords how to read tabs, etc?

this site is a good one:

Thanks! That looks like a good place to start.

I took lessons for about 3 months and my instructor taught me whatever it was that i liked to play, that really helped with getting started.
after that, I stopped the lessons and branched off to do my own learning, but it really helped that I took lessons.
I also subscribe to guitar one magazine. They include a cd every month with video lessons... very helpful.

To hell with tab, go learn some proper chords; take lessons. Everyone I know who have taken lessons say it's totally worth it.

Great video Nic. I'm going to go practice my facial gestures in the mirror.

Do what SOBIG said. I use this approach all the time. When I first took piano lessons it helped out to actually know the notes and sight read. And then when I took music classes all throughout middle and high school my piano classes helped so much in terms of the sight reading and tests and such.
If you're just doing it for fun, I would still suggest taking lessons for a few months, and then going about and doing your own learning. You can still take lessons while you're doing your own thing as well, of course.
My guitar has been sitting in my room for months now because I'm always too busy procrastinating to get around to it. I can play, "Smelly Cat" (from Friends), haha.
I'm planning on buying a bass or electric guitar sometime in the future to actually start paying for some professional lessons once I'm more free. I have my heart set on some really nice, black Fender ones.

make cool noises for 2 weeks,
learn the basic set of chords,
make loud noises with them,
(find a local tutor for 2 months - one lesson per week - then make some excuse your going on holiday)
also while getting the tutoring learn some nirvana or beatle tunes (learn the chorus first) you like, simple stuff

btw buy a decent tuner device, always helps

I'd suggest taking lessons for a little while. There's nothing better than learning with an instructor right in front of you.
This is what I did. I took lessons twice a week for 3 months, and then I kept learning by myself. I used to buy "Guitar World" because in every issue they have 5 or 6 tabbed songs and tons of licks and scales that can help you develop speed and accuracy.
I also bought books likes this one http://cgi.ebay.com/Pearl-Jam-Te…
This kind of book is good coz it has all songs tabbed from the whole album, and not only you learn the songs but chords as well.

seriously though - if you wanna get together sometime I can teach you some basic chords and structure...

i'd practically insist on you getting one on one lessons...it's way more fun and you'll pick shit up way quicker. like half our a week. most teachers will teach you the stuff you want to know and it's what the guitar's all about...sex....I mean people
