Do what SOBIG said. I use this approach all the time. When I first took piano lessons it helped out to actually know the notes and sight read. And then when I took music classes all throughout middle and high school my piano classes helped so much in terms of the sight reading and tests and such.

If you're just doing it for fun, I would still suggest taking lessons for a few months, and then going about and doing your own learning. You can still take lessons while you're doing your own thing as well, of course.

My guitar has been sitting in my room for months now because I'm always too busy procrastinating to get around to it. I can play, "Smelly Cat" (from Friends), haha.

I'm planning on buying a bass or electric guitar sometime in the future to actually start paying for some professional lessons once I'm more free. I have my heart set on some really nice, black Fender ones.
