the real problem with this thinking is that it doesn't work.It makes the assumption that the actions of a state will be interpreted as the state intends.
the draw a parallel, imagine punching a guy in the face. what will he do? cower in fear? possible, but it's far more likely he'll just get really pissed at you, and retailiate.

I don't honestly think i've seen a guy back off after getting punched in the face...
in any event, understanding the nature of hostility is vital in conflict resolution. once you find out the reasons behind aggression, solving the problem diplomatically becomes a little more feasable.
I don't know why some people in the islamic community so viciously hate the US...and the only thing i've heard are the speculations of political pundints...i'd be curious to see an interview with a person who actually follows that ideology.
