they bomb a church, we bomb 10. they hijack a plane, we take out one of their airports. they execute american tourist, we tactically nuke an entire city. make the reprocusions of terrorism so horrific that is becomes unthinkable to attack americans.

the real problem with this thinking is that it doesn't work.It makes the assumption that the actions of a state will be interpreted as the state intends.
the draw a parallel, imagine punching a guy in the face. what will he do? cower in fear? possible, but it's far more likely he'll just get really pissed at you, and retailiate.
