Is there a decent Mac based tool out there for simple video editing and re-encoding to .mov, .mpg? iMovie appears to only be able to output .mov files.

quicktime pro... not the viewer but the actual application should let you...

Oh and euhm... Premiere doesn't exist for Mac... but it's only a copy of Final Cut Pro anyway ;-)

I am leaning twards final cut express, seems like the closest premiere clone and would give some decent control ofver the bit rates and what not.

express is the way to go.

if you by quicktime pro you could just import your imovie .mov file and export it as an .mpeg
Final Cut Express is very nice program and is basically Final Cut Pro minus all the high-end export features.
