hrm. I did a small one hour job for a flash banner and they want the source files.
Should I give?
Part of me doesn't mind because it is boring and not much in particular.
The other part doesn't like the idea they could be using my source file to make more money with another client.. (a sub contracted job)

Meh, I sent it.
Don't know why I hesitated.

have you got a contract with them or them with you that states you gotta give them it?
tell them if they want the source code that you'll have to charge them extra cos the code is your own intellectual property :P

You should have hung on to them. They'll inevitable go somewhere else or amend it themselves if they need to make changes. It is your work after all.

you offered a service to them, the design of the banner.
now they want a "product" which is your source files. dont hand em over.
in essense, the source file is a tool which you CREATED to aid the service.
charge them extra for the source files as you would be handing over a product.
it would also be taxed differntly...

Wow excellent advice. I've lost this one, but I will make definate notes.
I wish someone would compile advice such as this. A big guide of practises. Or a book?
Can anyone recommend a good place to learn good practices? physical books considered.
I found some stuff from AIGA, but it's all print-related.

The issues most important to beginners . . . are covered exhaustively. Foote's discussion of fees, estimates, and billable time are right on the mark. This alone justifies the cover price.Book Description
Updated edition of an industry standard furnishes all freelance graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, copywriters, and design-shop principals with the tools needed to move ahead in the design business. From getting launched to running a multiperson shop to retiring comfortably this book covers it all and includes sample business forms. Softcover.

sweet ... crap - look at the price in UK for that book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/produ…
Amazon US: US$20.76
Amazon UK: £36 (US$63.12)I guess I'm waiting a few weeks to get it from the usa.. although the prices in that book won't be relevant.. perhaps I should find a UK book..

you should always decide this before hand. My rule of thumb was always if I am working on site then everything I do is owned by them and vice-versa if I am working elsewhere or nothing is agreed otherwise.

(Mar 27 06, 05:43)... or you could learn the stuff and write a UK specific book...
I always put source files are extra into the contract. And if its just some quick freelance stuff I put it in email that source files are extra so they know up front. Nothing worse then fighting over something when the jobs over. Its hard to get more work that way...
