amazing location for a school
but very limiting in terms of creative exploration

vancouver is amazing

I have seen them turn away some amazing artists... and accept some entirely mediocre ones.

Lived in Vancouver all my life. Granville Island in particular is an incredible spot. The general impression I get of the school is that it is mediocre. Sorry.

Vancouver is great, and from what I hear Emily Carr is fantastic. I have friends that went there and said it was everything they wanted it to be. It's also a great resume booster, since the school is widely known and pretty well respected. Be warned though... you won't want to leave BC.

supposed to be a very good school

even though it'd be embarassing to go to a school named after a chick
- horton0
i part-timed there for a couple years after i finished a design diploma elsewhere.
its a great place, incredible environment to immerse yourself in art & design, just has some internal bullsht politics but that pretty much goes for any art school.
i'm pretty sure you're too late for fall admissions.

why do you want to go to a canadian design school again?

here's your ECIAD application deadlines:
http://www.eciad.ca/www/admissio…
unless you already have 4+ years of art/ design education, you'll be applying for the Foundation program... they are pretty adamant about it, doesn't really matter how talented you are.

agree with backwards
going to canadian art school is some what of a downer, spend the money go to school in europe or US.
if you live there and cant afford school abroad than you got no choice but if you could, go somewhere else. go where design / art is appriciated not profs taking your ideas, forced in to doing something that what they want, also, better be white in most cases and look emo. Than they will accept you
- backwards0
dont go to school in the US, it'll be the biggest waste of your money.
there are better schools that are 10-30 times cheaper waiting for you in europe.
- dinky0
if you go to art school in US at you get a fancy school name like parsons or copper union etc etc
eventhough those schools are spoiled by rich asian kids

If it is anything like York (their design program) I completely understand the comment re: creativity.
I have heard mixed opinions on ECIAD, you may want to email U of Reading graduate Keith Tam, a great type designer who teaches typography there and perhaps he could also shed some light on whether or not it is right for you. http://www.keithtam.net

UQÀM in montréal is amazing.
you're immersed in the design community. i have nothing against this school other than the fact that most people here are snobs, but then when you are surrounded by artists, its pretty hard not to be surrounded by snobs.
btw. its french

UQAM is a really solid school and yes it is primarily french, but you could get by with english no problem. I come from Montreal and went to RISD in providence and while it was a good experience, I'm not sure if I would repeat my choice.
Like someone said before, the schools in the US are over populated with students who don't deserve to be there. Money is the main criteria which gets you into these schools. Don't get me wrong, there are crazy talented designers and artists as well, but I would say that they make up about 10 percent of the students there.
My girlfriend went to ECIAD and has nothing but good things to say about it. I have seen some of the work coming out of there and other schools in Canada which exceed the quality I see here in the states.
One last point. The company I work at right now have been trying to find designers in the US without any luck. I have seen hundreds of portfolios of diluted work. We are actually about to hire 2 canadians next week.
