So I don't normally use Illustrator, but I need to for a project. If I have a solid logo that I opened in Illustrator, how do I create a path to get rid of the white background?
Does that make sense? The logo is a jpeg with text in the middle, white all around it, but I'd like to put it on a colored background, minus the white. How can I get rid of it?

if you have only a jpeg you dont want to be in illustrator, you need tp open in photoshop and use the pen tool to draw a path around the logo and then set that path to be a clipping path, then resave as an eps

well, depending on the level of detail, livetrace might be the the tool for the job

just open it up in photoshop and crop and save

It's actually a test for a possible job...so I'm guessing I'm only supposed to use Illustrator? Maybe not...
But how do I do that livetrace thing? Is that done in Illustrator?

(Mar 25 06, 14:58)and if you get in trouble for using photoshop to clip the logo, you don't want the job.

or... trace a path around the image in illustrator, slect the layer and in the layer menu select make clipping path. the object on top will become the clipping path

I could easily do it in Photoshop, but it's supposed to be done in Illustrator so I'll give that clipping path idea a try.
Thanks!

you can just draw a line with the pen tool in illustrator as well, and then click the image and the path, right click, make clipping mask.
same can be done in photoshop.

If I tell you the easiest way do I get the job? ;)
Now, having not seen the actual image I would recommend just tossing a multiply blending mode on it. If it's just black text on a white background you should get the effect you want with a single click.

are you sure they don't want you to redraw the logo in illustrator?
- CincodeMayo0
Yeah, they're mostly interested in just seeing how I lay things out and design it. It's like a sample they want to see...and I may even put the logo on a white background, which means I can leave it as is, but I may put a color behind it so I may need to clip it. Illustrator is by far my weakness (I told them that in the interview) so I'm seeing what I can do with this.
Thanks for those tips. I'll give them a shot.

errr... sorry to say but it sounds like that job isn't for you ;p

cacoe: Thats mean.....
I think the best way is to use photoshop, clipping mask and save as eps

Thanks for all the tips...but I just changed the layer from NORMAL to DARKEN and the white disappeared, just what I was looking for.
So maybe I should apply for the job afterall?
FYI - I spent the last 2 years with a newspaper only using Quark and Photoshop, so I just need a refresher in Illustrator.
