Thanks for all the tips...but I just changed the layer from NORMAL to DARKEN and the white disappeared, just what I was looking for.
So maybe I should apply for the job afterall?
FYI - I spent the last 2 years with a newspaper only using Quark and Photoshop, so I just need a refresher in Illustrator.
