I started as a junior designer 2 years ago and now take projects from conception to final build.
I don't know box model theory or how to build a nav from a list. And I don't care either. So there.

we have to deal with a designer with no front end knowledge and she's consantly sending over graphics that are the wrong size or wrong format.

(Mar 22 06, 10:35)regardless of ability to code though, that simply means she's not knowledgable enough about what she's designing, ie, shit (web)designer - educate her...

canuck, considering Gordy and I have both met ppl that blagged their skill set then never produced the goods I think these types of test are completely necessary.
you can't compare it to a civil engineer either, plans for a bridge are considerably more work than creating list objects or the box model theory.
- fifty500
c'mon. horizontal lists are easy. lay it on 'em!

I've had to do something similar before. A couple times at my old work I had to take someone's CV that was printed out of MS word and put it into CSS/HTML.
Give em something with lists in there. It'll be a good way to get an idea of their understanding for the inheritance hierarchy of elements within elements.

(Mar 22 06, 12:57)I agree mate - that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. Was gonna see if they could make a top nav bar from a UL but think that may be pushing it somewhat.

I had a job interview years ago, they wanted me to do a redesign of their website before they would hire me. g.f.y.
- canuck0
Bah, I kind of think testing in an interview is silly. I am sure if you were an engineer and you went for a job interview they wouldn't say "okay now you have to draw up plans for a new bridge, before we hire you". I mean if they have the education, they should not be subjected to that. That is just my opinion though.

On second thought, I think thats a pretty good test for a jr. designer. At least to gauge their knowledge and how much you really need to teach them.

I guess in addition to your test, real simple shit such as which file format you should use and knowing when to use a graphic vs. css...
