Try to check out the Cremaster cycle. Matthew Barney's a pretty far out cat. It's funnier if you realize that he used to be a male model and a football (american) player.

He's also a Republican and broke into the art world by lubing himself up and climbing around a gallery naked.

think Yale was in there somewhere and that early climbing stuff was cool, well, refrigerated anyway.

Drawing Restraint 9
"The Simple Life" for a pair of self-important art-world celebrities. With a combination of lavish pageantry and industrial exertion, the Nisshin Maru, Japan's last whaling ship, sails off from Nagasaki Bay. Along with its crew, it carries two guests, Matthew Barney and Björk, who submit to elaborate rituals of tonsure, pomade, and dress at the hands of solemn bearers whose job it is to keep from laughing at their employers' airs. They partake of a classical tea ceremony in an unabashed display of Oriental kitsch that makes "Memoirs of a Geisha" look like an ethnographic documentary. As their berth fills with what might be water or whale oil, the couple lovingly carve each other up into human sushi. Barney, the director of this unbearably empty spectacle, has in effect filmed at great expense the couple's designer-sightseeing cruise, with little more skill and vastly more pretense than the average tourist. From the New Yorker.

I watched one of the cremaster movies at sfmoma in a darkened gallery on bleachers made to look like his ivory-esk sculpture.
really the only way to view his work, IMO.

Well written new yorker peice. I saw matthew's cremaster cycle in the guggenhiem and it seemed like nonsense.
However, in one of those "most creative people of 200x" issues of Tokion ('04 or '05) there was a transcript of barney presenting his work.
It was really awesome when he's there to explain it! It's like an extremely elabourate joke to give credibility to him basically manifesting his subconscious.
There was something about how a certain muscle in the penis is like a metaphor for creativity or something and he did all this crazy medical/anatomy research...
Making spectacles=power. While I don't totally love his work, I'm still kinda glad he's there.
