Smooth text

This may be a stupid question but i wasn't sure if it was possible.

I am working with a print designer to do a website, it is his client so he is doing most of the layout with with some input from myself (who will be making it interactive and doing the flash work), but one problem we always have is dealing with type. While smaller aliased type he uses looks fine in print, its not good for screen use. This is something I will have to explain to him for next time.

So I am resetting the type as non-aliased screen type for better readability, but I found that without the aliasing the type looks a little light and I was wondering if there is any way to recreate in photoshop, the smooth type the way OSX displays it. Playing with the different aliasing settings in photoshop dosn't give the same affect, and I know from taking a screen shot and zooming in, osx makes use of RGB pixels to create a smoother look without filling in counters etc.

Sorry for the long winded response, just wanted to see if anyone knew a way without having to take screen shots or something.

sorry, i don't understand. why is yer text not HTML text?

if it's gotta be something specific, just buy it and make yer own image to match.

No they will be images, the site is in flash and we would like it to look the same on both platforms.

What do you mean buy it and make your own image?

I have photoshop, and both pc platform and mac available to me so that is not an issue, I was just wondering if there were any techniques in photoshop to have more control over anti aliasing text similar to how osx displays normal text in html.

osX shits on PS's anti-aliasing capabilities. Do the text on a Mac word pad and screen grab?

take a screehshot of the print designers work on screen then use that for the graphics.

you are better using text in flash though surely? it might not look identically antialiased as the print stuff on screen but the file sizes will be a hoooor of a lot smaller.

tell the print designer to stick to print design!!!

i work for a company which is primarily a print design company then there is a small new media company within this company.
a lot of the projects i work on in the web section have had print stuff done too by the print section.
obviously the formats are NOT the same, so rather than taking designs "as is" from the print designers, i'll tweak the design so that it works best for the web. remember printed design and websites are a whole different user experience.
If a web designer has just taken a brochure, resized it and jpegged it up for the web thats not very impressive is it?

    yes, precisely Kon.

I hear what you are saying but he is a good friend of mine and I have worked with him for a while, I just need to explain to him about type on screen vs. print so that he knows for next time. While his 9 Frutiger would print nice, it dosn't hint well for screen use at small sizes. A lot of the other stuff like how the menus will function and the navigation will work we both sit down to discuss.

I am thinking the screen grab might be the only way as kelpie mentioned.

These are just small bodies of text, if I save them as gif they are barely over 1 kb so it shouldn't increase the size too much, I just want to ensure the screen appears on all platforms the same rather than relying on each os's abilities to render type on screen.
