"Pearl Jam to G'n'R to Pink Floyd to Radiohead to Sigur Ros even AC/DC"
Oooh, so many genres of music there! the whole spectrum
:o)
remimds me of an alan partridge quote:
"I like a wide range of music, from phil collins at one end of the spectrum, all the way to chris rea at the other"

To me they've always been an above average rock band choosen by genius Brian Eno to live in. Eno realized he wouldn't ever become a megastar, so he needed a host band he could produce. U2 were perfect for that. Energetic, charizmatic, and after all, tallented.
After brilliant Zooropa (prod. by Eno) they released an album as Passengers- 4 members of U2 and Brian Eno. It was interesting, but didn't work well commercially.
Just when they thought they could do without Eno, they recorded POP. Crap. They never recorded a good record since.
It's to say, they're doing pretty good for a band that released their last good album in1993.
They are amazing live - that's what keeps them on top. It's just sad to see them get all these grammys not for good music we were used to, but for Bono's political involvement.

thanks jaline
It's funny how people get all uptight when you question their taste in music, as if you're insulting them personally.
I'm used to people not sharing my taste in music as I mainly listen to Jazz. I'm fine with anyone saying that Chick Corea or John Coltrane sucks, as long as they've listen to them first. I have heard a lot of U2 and so feel that I'm entitled to my opinion!

U2 kidnapped me and made me rock out till I spewed up on myslef and those around me.
- valentim0
oi, veryone...not arguing peoples taste here, I like what I like, and you like what you like. still love you all.
Back to the subject: why are U2 the biggest rock band today?
Please dont get touchy!

Marsupials survived and evolved and grew in australia because there were no predators.

they went Amwrican at the right time and capitalised on the big stadium rock thing in doing so, thus shifting plentiful units in the USA, then re-invented themselves and became the light show and video kings, then sat back and coasted all the way to super rich retirement.
Seriously the Joshua tree and the one after that are totaly engineered to break America (no slagging intended) and they did it very well, hence they are fucking HUGE.

You name them I've probably seen them Baskerville. You want punk, I've seen 12 inches of blood, I've seen GWAR, I've seen the Roots. I've seen The Flaming Lips and Beck. If they've made it to Canada on the Northern US, I've seen them. Don't dismiss what I'm saying just because it may not be what you want to hear.
- valentim0
or maybe they managed to run from all the predators, so far that no one could catch them!

seriously, the american the thing! yes they broke into the USA with joshua, and then they came back, blah blah blah, whatever we all now that, the point is that simplicity, their music simplicity, beats any shit that tends to convince kids, look at the beatles, beautiful words, 3 chords...

what about classical, jazz, r&b, hip-hop, pop, dance, fusion, chamber music, electronica, funk, folk, country, blues, gospel, bossa nova, samba, not to mention all the 'world music' gernres, indian classical music, atonal music, modern classical, all the african music around, gammalan, mongolian throat singing etc........
so many styles and genres of music around that are left unexplored by most. just saying is all.
