I don't know if this was brought up before, but i think it would be interesting to discuss.
Those who freelance or run small design firms, do you charge for consultation? Do you write proposals for free or not? Do you charge for the time you spend with clients talking about their projects during development?
What if you write a proposal but then a client chooses someone else for the job and uses your ideas?

proposal = no
ideas = yes
Your proposal shouldn't include ideas just hours needed to come up with ideas and implement those ideas

I don't charge for proposals either, nor for consultation, but i'd like to know what other people do.

one should charge for meeting, emailing, etc. if that's what you mean by consultation. Build it into your proposal.
first meeting/kickoff is usually free

charge for emaling? where would you put that on the invoice?

you wouldn't itemize it, you should factor time for meetings and other communications into your qoute.

radar, but usually when i give an estimate lets say for the website, i break down all the costs...
design - $10
code - $10
flash - $10this way clients know what they're paying for.. would you simply distribute the amount for communication to all of the items?
